Footage over descriptions
Store pages show only the best moments. What several hours with a game actually feel like comes through far better in unedited gameplay footage. How repetitive stretches play, and whether the controls feel sluggish, are visible only there. Long play footage is more useful for judging than a short trailer.
What early access means
Selling before completion exists to fund development and gather feedback. There is no guarantee a game bought this way will be finished, and development does sometimes stop. Judge by whether the current state alone would satisfy you, and avoid buying on the strength of content promised later.
Worth checking before buying
Indie teams are small, so support can be narrow. A few checks before purchase cut down disappointments considerably.

- Whether your language is supported
- How saves work and whether cloud saves exist
- When it was last updated
Know the refund terms
Major stores generally refund within a set period and a set amount of playtime. Terms differ by store, so knowing them beforehand makes trying something low-risk. Discovering a problem after passing the playtime threshold is hard to undo, so launching a game soon after buying is the safer habit.
Do not stockpile during sales
Buying several at once during a big sale usually leaves most of them unplayed. It feels cheap, but the full price of a game you never start is simply wasted. Buy the one or two you actually want to play now; another sale will come.
